    Using the Balance Function to study the charge correlations of hadrons

    We present the recent Balance Function (BF) results obtained by the NA49 collaboration for the pseudo-rapidity dependence of non-identified charged particle correlations for two SPS energies. Experimental results indicate a clear centrality dependence only in the mid-rapidity region. The results of an energy dependence study of the BF throughout the whole SPS energy range will also be discussed. In addition, the correlation of identified hadrons is studied and presented for the first time. The study of hadron correlation has also been extended in order to cope with the high multiplicity environment that is expected to be seen at LHC.     System Size and Centrality Dependence of the Electric Charge Correlations in A+A and p+p Collisions at the SPS Energies

    The Balance Function analysis method was developed in order to study the long range correlations in pseudo-rapidity of charged particle. The final results on p+p, C+C, Si+Si and centrality selected Pb+Pb collisions at sNN=17.2\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 17.2 GeV and the preliminary data at sNN=8.8\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 8.8 GeV are presented. The width of the Balance Function decreases with increasing system size and centrality of the collisions.     Charge dependent azimuthal correlations in Pb--Pb collisions at sNN=2.76\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 2.76 TeV

    Separation of charges along the extreme magnetic field created in non-central relativistic heavy--ion collisions is predicted to be a signature of local parity violation in strong interactions. We report on results for charge dependent two particle azimuthal correlations with respect to the reaction plane for Pb--Pb collisions at sNN=2.76\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 2.76 TeV recorded in 2010 with ALICE at the LHC. The results are compared with measurements at RHIC energies and against currently available model predictions for LHC. Systematic studies of possible background effects including comparison with conventional (parity-even) correlations simulated with Monte Carlo event generators of heavy--ion collisions are also presented.Comment: Published in the proceedings of "Quark Matter 2011", Annecy-Franc

    Transition Radiation Spectra of Electrons from 1 to 10 GeV/c in Regular and Irregular Radiators

    We present measurements of the spectral distribution of transition radiation generated by electrons of momentum 1 to 10 GeV/c in different radiator types. We investigate periodic foil radiators and irregular foam and fiber materials. The transition radiation photons are detected by prototypes of the drift chambers to be used in the Transition Radiation Detector (TRD) of the ALICE experiment at CERN, which are filled with a Xe, CO2 (15 %) mixture. The measurements are compared to simulations in order to enhance the quantitative understanding of transition radiation production, in particular the momentum dependence of the transition radiation yield.Comment: 18 pages, 15 figures, submitted to Nucl.     Measurement of the production of charm jets tagged with D0^{0} mesons in pp collisions at s\sqrt{s}= 7 TeV

    The production of charm jets in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of s=7\sqrt{s}=7 TeV was measured with the ALICE detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The measurement is based on a data sample corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 6.236.23 nb1{\rm nb}^{-1}, collected using a minimum-bias trigger. Charm jets are identified by the presence of a D0^0 meson among their constituents. The D0^0 mesons are reconstructed from their hadronic decay D0^0\rightarrowKπ+^{-}\pi^{+}. The D0^0-meson tagged jets are reconstructed using tracks of charged particles (track-based jets) with the anti-kTk_{\mathrm{T}} algorithm in the jet transverse momentum range 5<pT,jetch<305<p_{\rm{T,jet}}^{\mathrm{ch}}<30 GeV/c{\rm GeV/}c and pseudorapidity ηjet<0.5|\eta_{\rm jet}|<0.5. The fraction of charged jets containing a D0^0-meson increases with pT,jetchp_{\rm{T,jet}}^{\rm{ch}} from 0.042±0.004(stat)±0.006(syst)0.042 \pm 0.004\, \mathrm{(stat)} \pm 0.006\, \mathrm{(syst)} to 0.080±0.009(stat)±0.008(syst)0.080 \pm 0.009\, \rm{(stat)} \pm 0.008\, \rm{(syst)}. The distribution of D0^0-meson tagged jets as a function of the jet momentum fraction carried by the D0^0 meson in the direction of the jet axis (zchz_{||}^{\mathrm{ch}}) is reported for two ranges of jet transverse momenta, 5<pT,jetch<155<p_{\rm{T,jet}}^{\rm{ch}}<15 GeV/c{\rm GeV/}c and 15<pT,jetch<3015<p_{\rm{T,jet}}^{\rm{ch}}<30 GeV/c{\rm GeV/}c in the intervals 0.2<zch<1.00.2<z_{||}^{\rm{ch}}<1.0 and 0.4<zch<1.00.4<z_{||}^{\rm{ch}}<1.0, respectively. The data are compared with results from Monte Carlo event generators (PYTHIA 6, PYTHIA 8 and Herwig 7) and with a Next-to-Leading-Order perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics calculation, obtained with the POWHEG method and interfaced with PYTHIA 6 for the generation of the parton shower, fragmentation, hadronisation and underlying event.Comment: 29 pages, 8 captioned figures, 3 tables, authors from page 24, published version, figures at http://alice-publications.web.cern.ch/node/525

    Phase-space dependence of particle-ratio fluctuations in Pb+Pb collisions from 20A to 158A GeV beam energy

    A novel approach, the identity method, was used for particle identification and the study of fluctuations of particle yield ratios in Pb+Pb collisions at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS). This procedure allows to unfold the moments of the unknown multiplicity distributions of protons (p), kaons (K), pions (π\pi) and electrons (e). Using these moments the excitation function of the fluctuation measure νdyn\nu_{\text{\text{dyn}}}[A,B] was measured, with A and B denoting different particle types. The obtained energy dependence of νdyn\nu_{\text{dyn}} agrees with previously published NA49 results on the related measure σdyn\sigma_{\text{dyn}}. Moreover, νdyn\nu_{\text{dyn}} was found to depend on the phase space coverage for [K,p] and [K,π\pi] pairs. This feature most likely explains the reported differences between measurements of NA49 and those of STAR in central Au+Au collisions

    Results from the NA49 experiment at the CERN SPS are presented on event-by-event transverse momentum and multiplicity fluctuations of charged particles, produced at forward rapidities in central Pb+Pb interactions at beam momenta 20AA, 30AA, 40AA, 80AA, and 158AA GeV/c, as well as in systems of different size (p+pp+p, C+C, Si+Si, and Pb+Pb) at 158AA GeV/c. This publication extends the previous NA49 measurements of the strongly intensive measure ΦpT\Phi_{p_T} by a study of the recently proposed strongly intensive measures of fluctuations Δ[PT,N]\Delta[P_T, N] and Σ[PT,N]\Sigma[P_T, N]. In the explored kinematic region transverse momentum and multiplicity fluctuations show no significant energy dependence in the SPS energy range. However, a remarkable system size dependence is observed for both Δ[PT,N]\Delta[P_T, N] and Σ[PT,N]\Sigma[P_T, N], with the largest values measured in peripheral Pb+Pb interactions. The results are compared with NA61/SHINE measurements in p+pp+p collisions, as well as with predictions of the UrQMD and EPOS models.Comment: 12 pages, 14 figures, to be submitted to PR

    Search for the QCD critical point in nuclear collisions at the CERN SPS

    Pion production in nuclear collisions at the SPS is investigated with the aim to search, in a restricted domain of the phase diagram, for power-laws in the behavior of correlations which are compatible with critical QCD. We have analyzed interactions of nuclei of different size (p+p, C+C, Si+Si, Pb+Pb) at 158AA GeV adopting, as appropriate observables, scaled factorial moments in a search for intermittent fluctuations in transverse dimensions. The analysis is performed for π+π\pi^+\pi^- pairs with invariant mass very close to the two-pion threshold. In this sector one may capture critical fluctuations of the sigma component in a hadronic medium, even if the σ\sigma-meson has no well defined vacuum state. It turns out that for the Pb+Pb system the proposed analysis technique cannot be applied without entering the invariant mass region with strong Coulomb correlations. As a result the treatment becomes inconclusive in this case. Our results for the other systems indicate the presence of power-law fluctuations in the freeze-out state of Si+Si approaching in size the prediction of critical QCD.Comment: 31 pages, 11 figure

    First measurement of Ξc0\Xi_{\rm c}^0 production in pp collisions at s\mathbf{\sqrt{s}} = 7 TeV

    The production of the charm-strange baryon Ξc0\Xi_{\rm c}^0 is measured for the first time at the LHC via its semileptonic decay into e+Ξνe^+\Xi^-\nu_{\rm e} in pp collisions at s=7\sqrt{s}=7 TeV with the ALICE detector. The transverse momentum (pTp_{\rm T}) differential cross section multiplied by the branching ratio is presented in the interval 1 << pTp_{\rm T} << 8 GeV/cc at mid-rapidity, y|y| << 0.5. The transverse momentum dependence of the Ξc0\Xi_{\rm c}^0 baryon production relative to the D0^0 meson production is compared to predictions of event generators with various tunes of the hadronisation mechanism, which are found to underestimate the measured cross-section ratio.Comment: 22 pages, 6 captioned figures, 1 table, authors from page 17, published version, figures at http://aliceinfo.cern.ch/ArtSubmission/node/412

    Production of deuterium, tritium, and 3^3He in central Pb+Pb collisions at 20A, 30A, 40A, 80A, and 158A GeV at the CERN SPS

    Production of dd, tt, and 3^3He nuclei in central Pb+Pb interactions was studied at five collision energies (sNN=\sqrt{s_{NN}}= 6.3, 7.6, 8.8, 12.3, and 17.3 GeV) with the NA49 detector at the CERN SPS. Transverse momentum spectra, rapidity distributions, and particle ratios were measured. Yields are compared to predictions of statistical models. Phase-space distributions of light nuclei are discussed and compared to those of protons in the context of a coalescence approach. The coalescence parameters B2B_2 and B3B_3, as well as coalescence radii for dd and 3^3He were determined as a function of transverse mass at all energies.Comment: 22 pages, 29 figures, 8 tables, for submission to Phys.
